HIROSHIMA: Mazda has announced plans to launch the CX-8 crossover SUV in Japan, with a teaser image of the cabin that shows the 3-row seating for six people.

The 4.9m long CX-8 is smaller than the CX-9 but share a similar wheelbase at 2.9m. It is motivated by 2.2-litre diesel engine paired to a six-speed automatic.

As Mazda doesn't sell the CX-9 domestically, the CX-8 is meant to fill the need in Japan for a large crossover. The new model, the first in the new-generation lineup in Japan to feature three rows of seating, will go on sale before the end of the year. The Japan-only crossover can also be configured  to seat six people, where more premium comfort is desired over the need for more seats by big families.

The latest new-generation model featuring the full suite of SKYACTIV technologies and KODO-Soul of Motion design, the CX-8 will be the flagship of Mazda's SUV lineup at home.

"The CX-8 is a new crossover for people who appreciate quality and need a car that seats more than five," said Mazda president and CEO Masamichi Kogai.

"It has the looks, performance and high-end feel customers expect from a Mazda, and even adults can sit comfortably in the third row. Mazda aims to create a strong emotional connection with customers, and we will achieve this by continually advancing our lineup to offer all customers our unique combination of driving pleasure and outstanding environmental and safety performance."
