LONDON: With teasers of the next generation Jaguar XF officially revealed, the British luxury carmaker also announced that it would be performing a world-first high-wire water crossing in London on Mar 24 – one week before its official debut in New York.

Jaguar has teamed up with British stuntman Jim Dowdell who has had his hand in movies such as Bond, Bourne and Indiana Jones.

The drive across will include two 34mm-diameter wires suspended high above the water and the action will be streamed globally on jaguar.co.uk/newxf at 19:00 GMT on 24 March (03:00 Malaysian time, Mar 25)

Initially launched in 2007, the car is Jaguar’s best selling model and the next generation XF has been completely revamped from the ground up.

Jaguar says that its latest XF will offer exceptional levels of technology, refinement, luxury and comfort.

The XF will be the second Jaguar model amongst its stablemates to use the British brand’s advanced aluminium-intensive architecture and will have a claimed fuel economy of over 70mpg (3.36L/100km).

The all-new Jaguar XF will make its global motor show debut in New York on Apr 1 and will thus release its full range and technical details.

“I believe the all-new XF will be the best looking car in its class. Elegant, handsome and with proportions that imbue a great sense of integrity – the all-new XF will be true to the strong tradition of sporting Jaguar saloons while being completely of its time,” said Jaguar director of design Ian Callum.

The ceremony marked the formal launch of the construction phase for the £150mil (approx. RM820mil) project which will create a new, cutting-edge UK automotive technology, innovation and education centre.

Jaguar Land Rover's new UK Automotive Innovation Centre - 01The 33,000 sq m (355,209 sq ft) facility, is due to open in the second quarter of 2017 and will become the hub for Jaguar Land Rover’s advanced research.

The site will be equipped with cutting-edge workshops, laboratories, virtual engineering suites and advanced powertrain facilities, equipped to enable a full range of design, visualisation and prototyping activities.

The development of the NAIC project is the next stage in Jaguar Land Rover's strategy to develop its global R&D and engineering capability.

Once opened, the centre will have 1,000 employees and will enable Jaguar Land Rover to co-locate 600 of its engineers, researchers and technologists to work collaboratively with academics and R&D specialists from across the automotive supply chain.

Details of the specific research projects that will take place in the NAIC will be announced in due course, but these will be long-term, multi-disciplinary challenges – such as electrification, smart and connected cars and the Human Machine Interface.

The development of the new NAIC facility will complement Jaguar Land Rover’s product research and development centres in Gaydon and Whitley.

The NAIC will become the hub for advanced research teams, Gaydon and Whitley will continue to be Jaguar Land Rover’s centres of excellence for engineering and product development.
