Nissan's Juke and Qashqai crossovers get hybrid efficiency upgrades

TOKYO: Nissan is building a bridge from diesel and petrol to the electric cars of the future and switching two of its most important cars — its Juke and Qashqai cash cow crossovers — to the hybrid model.

Set to arrive internationally with hybrid drive in mid-2022, the Juke and Qashqai are starting their turn away from combustion engines with completely different technologies.

In the case of the Juke, Nissan has adopted a hybrid from the sister model Renault Captur. This combines a 70 kW/95 hp petrol engine with a 37 kW/50 hp electric motor and a buffer battery of almost 2 kWh.

All that doesn't amount to much zero-emissions driving, however. Instead, the impact of this hybrid tech is more about lowering emissions overall.

While the Juke can't be charged up with a wall box at home and can only manage 5 km in pure electric mode, Nissan says its tests have shown that in city traffic it can drive up to 80% of the time on electricity alone.

The battery is then recharged in hybrid phases or during braking, after which it can drive purely electrically again, according to the company.

And even though it's now 25% more powerful than the pure combustion engine, it is said to also be around 20% more frugal in standard conditions (5.1 litres and 117 g/km CO2 emissions).

In the larger Qashqai and its new E-Power drive, on the other hand, the wheels are driven exclusively electrically by a 140 kW/190 hp motor. This draws its energy from a battery of around 2 kWh, which is fed on board by a generator.

According to the makers, this 115 kW/156 hp three-cylinder engine should always run in the optimal speed range and is therefore much more economical. They point to a consumption of 5.3 litres (119 g/km CO2).

However, Nissan does not want to stop with these two hybrids, for which prices have yet to be announced.

In 2022, the X-Trail will also be offered in the class above the Qashqai with E-Power drive and then, with two electric motors, will also offer all-wheel drive with this hybrid technology for the first time.
