KUALA LUMPUR: There are no plans to ban the use of retreaded tyres as they are deemed safe, Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Ab Aziz Kaprawi said.

“Based on police statistics on accidents, only eight cases involving retreaded tyres were detected out of 30,458 accidents recorded in 2013 or representing 0.03% of the total.

He said retreaded tyres for passenger and commercial vehicles which are used by local motorists met the Malaysian standard and United Nations specifications.

On a separate issue, Deputy International Trade and Industries Minister Datuk Hamim Samuri told the House that approval import permits were given to 22 car franchise companies and 14 motorcycle companies last year.

He said that 100 car and 67 motorcycle companies were provided open import permits on used commercial cars and motorcycles.
