No way Bugatti is making an offroader

BERLIN: Super luxury carmaker Bugatti will not be bringing out a gilded sports utility to rival the likes of the Rolls-Royce Cullinan or Bentley Bentayga, the Volkswagen-owned company has announced.

"There will be no SUV", Bugatti chief Stephan Winkelmann told Germany's Auto Motor und Sport magazine. An offroader did not fit in with the French brand's image or its heritage, said the manager.

Bugatti is renowned for its sporting tradition and currently produces the ridiculously fast Chiron super sportscar. It comes with a 1,500-horsepower, 8.0-litre 16-cylinder quad-turbo engine.

Bugatti is owned by Volkswagen and a new model is probably not at the top of the VW group's priority list amid fallout from the diesel emissions scandal and calls for a blanket speed limit on the German motorway.

More likely is an ultra-luxury limousine similar to the Bugatti Royale, a superlative saloon built from 1927 to 1933 which was popular with European royalty.

Winkelmann recently hinted that the brand was considering a new model but gave away nothing concrete.

"Our customers can rest assured that we are working every day to ensure that Bugatti remains true to its proud heritage," said the manager. This year Bugatti celebrates 110 years in the car business.
