FRANKFURT: Skoda has launched the fourth generation of the spacious Octavia as a saloon and estate, and is now planning to follow up with a Scout-badged off-road estate later in 2020.

The Czech maker is gearing its bestseller up for small everyday adventures with a Scout version that takes the compact car a little into crossover territory.

In addition to almost 2 cm more ground clearance and a new trim, Skoda says it will also give the Scout a technical upgrade under the hood.

A new diesel is set to make its debut in the Scout with a 2.0-litre TDI putting out 200 horsepower to make the most powerful diesel engine in the series to date, the manufacturer says.

In addition, there are two more diesels with 115 and 150 hp, as well as two petrol engines: a 1.5-litre with 150 hp and an optional mild hybrid unit or a 2.0-litre with 190 hp.

Whereas the Scout was previously available exclusively with four-wheel drive, the two entry-level engines are now also available with front-wheel drive for the first time.

Skoda is still leaving the Scout's exact launch date and pricing open.
