WASHINGTON: First the good news and then the bad: BMW has unveiled the first electrified MINI Cabriolet, but unfortunately it's a one-off car and no one knows when it will go into production.
The unique drophead shown at a brand event in Asheville in the United States has nevertheless fuelled hopes that one of the best ways to enjoy MINI motoring will soon be available in zero-emission trim.
BMW said the bespoke MINI convertible is "a unique specimen that shows how the path to an all-electric premium brand could continue and also electrify classic sporty open-air driving in the future."
In 2023, MINI is set to present the first model of a new generation of purely electric cars. The MINI 3-door takes centre stage, with a crossover model promised for the small car and the premium compact segments. In 2025, the last new MINI with a pure combustion engine drive will be launched.
The one-off model shown in North America is based on the MINI Cooper S Cabriolet and uses the same drive components as the electric three-door MINI Cooper SE. Its motor produces 184 hp/135 kW with WLTP-cycle range given as 230km.
With an open-top E-MINI, the BMW offshoot would be entering a near-defunct segment which could be ripe for revival.
Apart from the new Fiat 500 and the Smart Fortwo, there is currently no open-top small electric car to be had and the latter is already approaching the end of its production run.
A number of makers from Tesla to Pininfarina to Polestar have announced upcoming fresh-air electric cars, but even if they do materialise, they will be more expensive to buy than a drophead MINI.
