PUTRAJAYA: More than 30,000 motor vehicle workshops in the country including service centres, tyre and accessories shops will be required to have a licence to operate when laws regarding maintenance and repair services of vehicles are enforced.

Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said the Motor Vehicle Service and Repair Bill, will be tabled in Parliament in March to safeguard the rights and interests of consumers besides ensuring the industry continues to thrive.

He said more than 30,000 workshops would be granted licences to operate after fulfilling the requirements set by the ministry according to the categories of services provided.

"The workshop also needs to have enough qualified mechanics to obtain a licence according to their service category. There are workshops that provide the full service, then there are those providing services such as knocking out dents on the vehicle and painting only. This category will be decided later,” he said here last week.

Hamzah said the bill was drafted following public complaints on poor services provided by some workshops.
