PAL-V flying car is now street legal

ROTTERDAM: Dutch flying car PAL-V Liberty has been approved for use on public roads — at least in EU member countries.

However, further tests are still required of the prototype that has been 20 years in the making. The PAL-V will be undergoing endurance testing in the coming months on European roads.

Since 2015, the PAL-V Liberty design has been going through aviation certification with EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency). It's expected to be finalised in 2022, making deliveries only possible after it wins this key approval.

After flying and driving the test prototype in 2012, PAL-V started the design of the Liberty.

The vehicle had recently passed the stringent European road admission tests, giving it the right to don an official licence plate. This completed a rigorous and extensive drive test program carried out on test tracks since February 2020, where the Liberty was subjected to high-speed ovals, brake and noise pollution testing.

The first PAL-V Liberty models on the market will be the Pioneer Edition. Worldwide, only 90 vehicles of this edition will be sold. It would be followed by the Liberty Sports models. The Pioneer Edition would be priced from €499,000, while the Sports model would retail at €299,000.

"The trick in successfully making flying car is to ensure that the design complies with both air and road regulations," said PAL-V chief technology officer Mike Stekelenburg.
