Penang to fully switch to app-based parking from 2020

GEORGE TOWN: No more paper-based coupons will be sold from Dec 31 and any stock you have left will be valid only until Dec 31 next year.

This was the reminder issued by city councillor Gooi Seong Kin at the Penang Island City Council full meeting.

“All Penang motorists and visitors who drive must download the Penang Smart Parking (PSP) app and start using it.

“For those who are unwilling or unable to make online transactions to top up credits into the app, the council has appointed five official agents to sell PSP e-coupons other than the council itself.

“They are 7Eleven, Happy Mart, Yang Agency, PH Ocean and Jefferson.

“The e-coupons will have codes for users to punch into the app to top up their credits, ” he said.

Gooi also announced the standardised chargeable parking hours for PSP on the mainland and on the island.

“The chargeable parking hours will be from 8am to 6pm every day except on Sundays and public holidays.”

It was earlier reported that Penang was the first state to fully implement smart parking via an app.

The app allows motorists to pay for parking through their smartphones.

By August 2020, all 36,000 public parking spaces in Penang will have sensors embedded into the road surface that will tell app users if any of the lots near them are vacant.
