RAWANG: Perodua Global Manufacturing Sdn Bhd, the country’s first Energy Efficient Vehicle (EEV)-certified automotive plant, was opened on Tuesday as the national car company moves towards becoming a global player.

Construction of the RM1.3bil plant started on March 2013. It began making the Axia model in August 2014 and has already delivered 138,000 cars to customers nationwide as of December 2015.

Perodua holds up the new plant as the epitome of energy efficiency in car production. It uses energy-efficient lighting, tracks hourly consumption, uses efficient heating and cooling systems, and shuts down equipment when they are not used. It said its energy-efficiency initiatives have resulted in a reduction of emissions on vehicle production.

The 1.0-litre Axia comes in six variants and is priced from around RM25,000 to RM44,000. Malaysia's most affordable new car, the Axia replaced the Viva and is available with a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. The Axia is based on the Daihatsu Ayla/Toyota Agya platform.

Perodua chairman Tan Sri Asmat Kamaludin said the 64,000 square metre plant and its workers would serve as a benchmark for the rest of Perodua's operations as the car maker strives to be a competitive global player.

Perodua Global Manufacturing is an avenue for Perodua to improve quality, cost controls and timely delivery, he added.

The plant was opened by Minister of Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin who stood in for Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
