PETALING JAYA: Jalan Semangat in Petaling Jaya will be renamed Jalan Professor Khoo Kay Kim in tribute to national historian Emeritus Professor Tan Sri Dr Khoo Kay Kim who died in May.

In a statement, Selangor Mentri Besar Amirudin Shari said Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah had given his blessing to rename the road.

“It will serve as a reminder of all of his services and contributions to the country,” he said.

Widely regarded as Malaysia's national historian, Khoo died of lung failure on May 28 at the University Malaya Medical Centre at the age of 82.

He is remembered as one of the instrumental figures in the drafting of the Rukun Negara (National Principles) to foster national cohesion, following the aftermath of the 1969 race riots.

As the author of countless works in the English and Malay language, his essays and writings have been a primary source of reference for the history curriculum in Malaysia.

He was most noted for his work The Western Malay States 1850–1873, which was published in 1972.

Amirudin also said that all road signage in Selangor would now be in Bahasa Malaysia only, in line with Act 152 of the Federal Constitution and the National Language Act 1963/1967.

“This issue has received the attention of the ruler who advised the state government to uphold the Malay language by allowing only Bahasa Malaysia to be used in all official government signboards, including (those of) local authorities," he said.
