Petaling Jaya's one-way loop steps into Phase 2

PETALING JAYA: Phase 2 of the one-way loop (OWL) here will be implemented at the end of February.

Among work to be done for the phase are removing road medians at some parts of the route, creating pedestrian walks and cycling lanes, installing closed-circuit television cameras, building bus stops and landscaping.

Petaling Jaya deputy mayor Puasa Md Taib said the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) had engaged the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety (Miros) to conduct road safety assessments before, during and after the construction of Phase 2.

“The council engaged the contractor through open tender and was awarded by the state’s tender committee to conduct the Phase 2 construction work at RM23mil,” Puasa said at the council fullboard meeting yesterday.

MBPJ also planned to engage opinion research firm Merdeka Centre to conduct a survey on OWL stakeholders, especially business owners who complained of a drop in business since the system was implemented last year.

If the problem was real and widespread, the council would hold a dialogue before Chinese New Year, with the business owners to see what the former could do to help rejuvenate business traffic, he added.

Puasa also said that although the review on the proposed Kinrara-Damansara Elevated Expressway (Kidex) was put online since Tuesday, MBPJ would also upload the document to its website for residents to download and read.

“I will also bring it to the state executive council for discussion as soon as possible,” he stated.

The review, he clarified, was not a fresh study on Petaling Jaya’s traffic numbers and other data, but was an independent consultant’s review of the studies compiled by Kidex Sdn Bhd’s own consultants.

“Even if Kidex was approved by the state and Federal governments, the proposed highway will still have to be included in the local plans and undergo the amendment and objection exercises,” he said.

On his deputy mayor post, Puasa said he would continue to serve until both the state government and Public Service Commission decide on the candidate for the post of mayor and deputy mayor for the city.
