Peugeot enters restoration game with refurbished 205 GTI

PARIS: Peugeot has chosen a rare hot hatch to launch its entry into the business of restoring and selling original examples of classic models from its former range.

The first car to get the treatment is the 1.9-litre 205 GTI, a pepped-up version of the standard chunky hatchback that still has a strong following, even if it failed to achieve the cult status of its Volkswagen Golf namesake in its heyday.

Production stopped in 1993 and these days well-kept, unmolested examples of the zippy GTI can change hands for more than US$35,000.

The vehicles will be refurbished at the workshops of the Musee de l’Aventure Peugeot in Sochaux, France, and will receive a certificate of authenticity before being made available for sale. No price information has been announced.

Peugeot owners and enthusiasts will be able to request a quote and have their car fully or partially restored by the museum’s expert technicians from early 2021.

Mercedes-Benz offers a similar refurbishment service in Germany although most of the models turned out are expensive premium or sports car models of yore.

Peugeot said the first restored GTI will be finished in black - an odd choice considering that red and white were among the most popular original colours.

The French maker said subcontractors would help source any missing parts and advanced 3D manufacturing techniques will be used for components that are no longer in production.
