GOTHENBURG: Volvo's performance brand Polestar has now revealed an idea of how much the Polestar 2 will cost, along with other details about its future plans.

The Polestar 2 is a fully electric sedan that's designed to be a rival to the Tesla Model 3, and is set to cost from around €40,000 (RM193,000) when it finally arrives in 2020. Not long after that one arrives we'll then be treated to the Polestar 3, which will be the brand's "low and aerodynamic" SUV offering. And although the majority of the key markets for Polestar will require left-hand drive models, both the Polestar 2 and 3 will also be available in right-hand drive form too for buyers in places such as Britain.

Of course, the first model in the Polestar lineup will be the limited-edition, 600-horsepower Polestar 1 coupe, which is set to be available sometime next year. Both the Polestar 1 and Polestar 3 will be manufactured at a new facility in Chengdu, China.

Although it has been confirmed there will be more than 50,000 Polestar 2 sedans built per year, there is no word yet about where they are going to be built. It hasn't been officially confirmed yet, but earlier reports have suggested the possibility of a Polestar 4 by 2020, with strong indications it will be a convertible model.

Polestar's chief executive officer, Thomas Ingenlath, told the UK's Auto Express, "Polestar 2 will join the competition with Tesla Model 3, so people should have an understanding of the size and the price tag as well. It will start around €40,000."

"We are not saying it's a Tesla killer, we are here to compete with them in the market. We will launch Polestar 2 in the second half of 2019 and production will begin around the start of 2020."

It's not clear about how buyers will be able to buy the Polestar 2 and 3 models though, and that's because the Polestar 2 has been given that €40,000 while the Polestar 1 is being retailed on a purely subscription basis. What we do know is Polestar will be selling direct to buyers through the Internet as well as exclusive Polestar stores that are in the pipeline.
