Police firm on not reducing fines for serious traffic offences

KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman fully supports the Transport Ministry’s proposal to reduce the fines for certain traffic offences but insists that for serious ones, the fines must remain as they are.

“Examples of serious offences are speeding, beating the red light and cutting queue,” said its Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Senior Asst Comm Mahamad Akhir Darus when contacted yesterday.

He said police have been issuing lesser fines for minor traffic offences such as haphazard parking since 2011.

“However, the current maximum rate of RM300 for serious offences, especially those that resulted in accidents, must remain,” SAC Mahamad Akhir said when commenting on a proposal by the ministry to reduce the fines for certain traffic offences from RM300 to RM150.

If approved, offenders must pay their fines within two weeks. Any delay in paying up will result in the fines being increased.

SAC Mahamad Akhir said for minor parking-related offences, a fine of RM100 would be issued.

“We also fully support the move to streamline the rates of the police and Road Transport Department (JPJ). It is timely and for the convenience of all motorists,” he added.

On Tuesday, Deputy Minister Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi said the proposal was still subject to Cabinet’s approval and amendments to the Road Transport Act.

He also said the rate for the summonses must be streamlined.

Abdul Aziz said the proposal was to coordinate inter-agency summonses for similar offences.
