Porsche 718 Cayman races with drones

LONDON: Porsche has come up with a stunt to draw people’s attention to the 718 Cayman.

The premise in one of its latest video foray is this: is the 300hp 718 Cayman fast enough to outrun a swarm of race drones? There’s only one way to find out and that’s to put it to the test.

Stunt driver Mauro Carlo and YouTube gamer Ali-A tested this at Medway Port, which is 60km south-east of here. They started a giant cat-and-mouse game with six drones between three check points.

The 2.0-litre engine of the 718 Cayman produces up to 380Nm of torque, generated between 1,950 - 4,500 rpm. There’s also a more powerful Cayman known as Cayman S (350hp/420Nm), which sports a 2.5-litre engine that features a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry.

With drone use becoming more widespread, it was a matter of time before car makers use them for more than just creative shots of their cars in motion.

The Porsche video clip, posted on Nov 22, has since attracted over 2 million views - and counting.

Porsche’s stunt isn’t really new. In fact, it’s a variation of the same gig Nissan did with its 2017 GT-R that it announced in June. In that event, Nissan said it created a race drone of its own to keep up with the GT-R.
