STUTTGART: Porsche offers many variants of its treasured 911. Even though they are all suitable for everyday use, some probably feel more at home on the racetrack — such as the new 911 GT3.
Porsche, once again flexing some muscle and underlining the racier side of the 911, has announced plans to offer its cult coupe as a GT3 again from May.
Equipped with a roll cage and six-point seat belts on request (and at no extra charge), the two-seater will be go on sale at prices starting at €167,518 (RM818,000) in its home market of Europe.
The highlights are a further developed chassis with rear-axle steering and an aerodynamics package with up to 150 per cent more downforce than its predecessor, as well as a subtly improved engine.
The four-litre six-cylinder produces up to 510hp without a supercharger and, thanks to this 911's lighter design, now enables a power-to-weight ratio of 2.8kg per hp, while enabling a sprint from 0 to 100kph in 3.4 seconds. The manufacturer is not yet giving information on fuel consumption and top speed.
However, Porsche gave another figure that is even more important for a sports car with a penchant for the racetrack: the lap time for the famous Nordschleife track of the Nuerburgring.
There, the new GT3 was the first production 911 to break the magic seven-minute barrier with a time of 6:59:927 minutes, taking 17 seconds off its predecessor.
