Porsche wants to help develop synthetic fuels

STUTTGART: Porsche is keen to find partners to develop synthetic fuels or eFuels as it aims to continue making cars with pure combustion engine alongside hybrids and electric cars.

Fuel cell cars are not in its future plans however, said Porsche R&D chief Michael Steiner.

"We are convinced that these three drive technologies will survive on the market in the medium term," said Steiner.

eFuels are considered a realistic alternative to make car traffic more climate-friendly but availability is poor.Porsche wants to change this.

Steiner says the internal combustion engine has a long life ahead.

“With electricity alone, you can't move forward fast enough,”

Porsche is also considering the use of eFuels in motorsports as well as for its historical cars. It said it wants to have a say in the specifications of a new synthetic fuel following lessons learnt from using E10 biofuel previously.

"We absolutely want to help with this process so that the fuel is suitable for high-performance engines.” Problems like those encountered with the introduction of E10 should not be repeated. "When E10 came onto the market, the blend had some disadvantages. It must be different this time: it must have advantages."

Although Porsche plans for half of all its vehicles sold to be electric by 2025, the existing fleet is large.

"Our cars are driven for a very, very long time," said Steiner. “And, while our hybrid vehicles are powered electrically for short distances, they rely on their combustion engines over longer distances.”
