PETALING JAYA: Besides individuals, more companies are coming forward to donate towards Tabung Harapan Malaysia, the newly set up government trust fund to help the country pay its national debt.

Proton is believed to be the first car maker to voice support for Tabung Harapan Malaysia, and has pledged RM10 from every Proton car purchase to be donated to the fund. Proton will donate money to the fund from June 1 until Dec 31, 2018.

"As a caring organisation, Proton feels the need to come forward to provide additional assistance towards this worthy cause, for the country and the people of Malaysia," it said in a statement.

The Government set up the fund after numerous Malaysians expressed a desire to donate to help the country alleviate its national debt, which Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng had said was now more than RM1 trillion.

Malaysians across the country and from all walks of life have since opened up their hearts and wallets to help the nation, burdened by astronomical debt left by the previous administration.

Tabung Harapan Malaysia has collected over RM18.6mil just two days after it was launched on Wednesday.

The Finance Ministry announced on Twitter that it had collected RM18,608,926.36 as of 3pm today.

On Thursday, Lim revealed that Malaysians had donated RM7mil within 24 hours of the trust fund's launch.

Anyone can donate any amount to Tabung Harapan Malaysia which operates from a Maybank account: 5660 1062 6452. The finance ministry will post daily update of the amount collected.
