KUALA LUMPUR: Proton is looking upbeat these days under Geely's watch. Its sales volume jumped 18.5% in August to 9,501 cars from the previous month, marking a new high for the year.

The carmaker also projects a third consecutive month of market share growth, with an estimated 15.4% share of total industry volume expected for August.

It said the Saga and Persona models continued to lead sales for the company for 2018 with 4,000 and 2,957 registrations respectively.

"August saw a third consecutive month of sales growth for Proton as we set yet another volume high for the year," said Proton Edar CEO Abdul Rashid Musa.

"This was primarily fuelled by the current zero-rated GST climate prior to the implementation of Sales Service Tax (SST), as well as our aggressive marketing campaigns that reminded Malaysians to take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime tax holiday.

"The strong sales numbers show there is an increase in public confidence in the brand as more people are choosing PROTON due to the attractive overall package we offer. Our turnaround plan is on track so the onus is on us to make sure these new customers stay by delivering a high level of customer service."

Proton's sales momentum may be maintained for September as it will be absorbing the SST charge for all its vehicle models during the month, giving customers additional time to make a tax-free purchase.

Proton sold a 49.9% stake in the company to Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co Ltd (Geely) in May last year.
