PETALING JAYA: Go Auto Sales Sdn Bhd showed off on Wednesday a prototype of a new police patrol car to Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in hopes of securing a deal to replace the ageing police fleet.

Go Auto said it had received a letter of intent from the Home Ministry to supply 425 units of mobile patrol cars, to replace the Proton Wira and Waja-based police cars in stages. The prototype police car is a Toyota Corolla Altis.

The cars will come with five years of free service and each unit will be equipped with additional accessories suitable for police work such as the Integrated Light Sound System and Fleet Management System, as well as the Very High Frequency communication radio set.

Go Auto expects the police to use the first 100 units of the Toyota model in the ongoing Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation 2020 meetings.

Go Auto group executive director Datuk SM Azli SM Nasimuddin said the first batch of the cars would be delivered to the police in less than two months, while the rest will follow two months later.

At present, Go Auto is awaiting the final decision by the Ministry of Finance.

"This is the second time Go Auto has been awarded a tender. We are bidding in open government and private tenders as it is part of our business diversification," said Azli.

Go Auto, set up in 2013, is the assembler and sole distributor for Haval SUVs in Malaysia and Asean. It is also a contract assembler for various China brands of vehicles such as Dong Feng trucks, Mian Yang Jinbei light trucks and Adly All-Terrain Vehicles.
