SIBU: Owners of vehicles with illegal HID (high-intensity discharge) headlights are strongly urged to replace them as the move to ban them will be enforced next year.

Pelawan assemblyman David Wong said the Road Transport Department (RTD) Sibu head Faizal David Jamil had assured him that his department would fully enforce the law next year.

Wong said this was in line with the statement made by Transport Minister Anthony Loke that such aftermarket headlights that do not meet specifications would be banned next year.

Under the law, those caught would be fined RM2,000 or jailed for up to six months.

“I met Faizal last week during a Charity Without Border event last week. I told him to enforce the law and he gave his assurance that his department would do it,” he added.

According to Wong, such illegal headlights were dangerous to other road users as the bright white light could cause temporary blindness and also accidents.

“I have experienced it a few times when my eyes were hurt by the flashing strong lights,” he said.

Wong said vehicle owners who replaced the original headlamps with HID ones should get them changed again so that they would not be caught and summoned for the offence next year.

But there were also others whose vehicles were already fitted with them when they bought it. “For these people, I advise them to consult with the RTD for further clarification so as not to run afoul of the law,” he said.
