Renault Clio GT

By CARSIFU | 19 August 2015

The Renault Clio GT is a punchy 1.2-litre turbo petrol go-getter that’s willing to stand toe-to-toe with anything that makes it look diminutive on the streets and should arrive by late 2015.

But does this little hatch with a rear torsion beam suspension system that’s said to have a price tag of RM120,000 have what it takes to slug it out with the big boys?

A diesel variant is also available, however, TC Euro Cars - sole franchise holder of the Renault brand in Malaysia, says it has opted not to introduce it to the local market.

Firstly, the raspy turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine may not be up there with its more potent Clio RS sibling, but it should still command some respect.

It’ll dish out 118bhp at 4,900rpm and 190Nm of torque at 2,000rpm, while drinking from its 45-litre fuel tank.

Though it may not seem much at first, but for something that weighs 1,104kg (kerb), it should deem a second thought before provoking.

And, if you can outrun its 0-100kph in 9.4 seconds sprint time and top speed of 199kph - all thanks to its six-speed Efficient Dual-Clutch transmission, then perhaps there might be a fighting chance to provoke, evade, extend and escape.

The Clio GT has a wheelbase of 2,589mm, with the front track measuring 1,509mm and the rear at 1,513mm – wider by 4mm, while the little front wheel–drive hatchback stands measuring 4,063mm-long, 1,732mm-wide and 1,448mm-tall.

Furthermore, it rolls on 17-inch alloy wheels with 205/45 series tyres that sees the front 258mm x 22mm disc brakes and rear 228mm x 38mm drums peeking through.

Although the Clio GT hasn’t arrived just yet, there’s a slew of safety equipment available that includes four airbags and Isofix anchor points.

Other safety equipment may include antilock braking system, emergency brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution, electronic stability control, hill-start assist and anti-slip regulation.

Last but not least, the Clio GT should come with a rear-view camera, keyless entry and push-start button, cruise control, automatic wipers and xenon headlights to round it off.
