Skoda's supercar for sensible money

LONDON: To show how much the performance gap has closed between supercars and sensible cars over recent decades, Skoda has benchmarked its new Skoda Superb 2.0TSi against a host of 1970s, 80s and even 90s supercar icons.

With 280PS, that's 276bhp, on tap and a 0-100kph time of just 5.8 seconds, the new Superb is the most powerful production Skoda in the marque's history.

And thanks to a paddle-shift double clutch gearbox, permanent all-wheel drive and a host of stability controls it is also one of Skoda's easiest cars to drive.

Yet when Skoda took it to the track in estate (or wagon), rather than sedan form, no less, the car, which boasts ample room for a family of four and plenty of luggage space beat a Ferrari 308 GTB, a 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera, an original Honda NSX and a first-generation Lotus Esprit in a straight line race.
