PARIS: Car traffic on most Parisian streets will become a little slower from today as the speed limit is lowered to 30kph, in line with the results of a survey by city officials.

Fifty-nine per cent of Parisians had agreed to a speed limit, with 25-per-cent fewer accidents, two times less noise and more space, especially for cyclists, cited as arguments for slowing down traffic.

The speed limit is already 30kph on 60 per cent of streets already, they added.

The measure is one of several aimed at curbing the number of cars in Paris.

Some 52kmof cycling lanes separating cyclists from cars with concrete blocks that were set up during the pandemic are currently being converted into permanent bike lanes.

On other streets, public meeting spaces, gardens, trees and bicycle parking are taking over spaces meant for cars.

But the speed limit is also not without its critics: The survey also included residents of Greater Paris, 61 per cent of whom were against the measure.

The car drivers' association 40 millions d'automobilistes casts doubt on the measure.

It argues that within Paris, there are few accidents anyway, and if there are, then mostly cyclists are the ones affected.
