Subaru kills off combustion engined WRX STI

NEW YORK: Subaru has announced Friday that the WRX STI as we know it will be axed as the company looks towards a future of electrification.

However, Subaru might still bring it back in electrified form, as the following statement from the Japanese car maker intimated: "Subaru Corporation is exploring opportunities for the next generation Subaru WRX STI, including electrification. In the meantime, a next generation internal combustion engine WRX STI will not be produced based upon the new WRX platform."

Prior to this shock announcement, Subaru fans had been expecting a 345hp STI to be released, but that looks unlikely now except for the hope now that it could be reinvented with an electrified powertrain sporting such beefy specifications.

The WRX STI was introduced in 1994 featuring 247hp.

The WRX STI and the STI brand represent the peak of Subaru’s performance vehicles exemplifying its DNA and rally heritage.
