KUALA LUMPUR: The government will call for tenders for three new work packages worth RM980mil for the Pan Borneo Highway project in the first quarter of next year, the Dewan Rakyat was told.

Works Minister Baru Bian said the three packages in Sabah – involving packages 28,29 and 30 – cover road upgrade works over 60km between the Telupid and Beluran interchanges.

He said this was on top of the 12 work packages in the state that had already been implemented.

“Meanwhile, 20 other packages that have yet to be tendered out will be implemented under the 12th Malaysia Plan between 2021 and 2025, subject to budget approval from federal agencies, ” he told Ahmad Hassan (Warisan-Papar) during question time.

Ahmad had asked the ministry to state the number of work packages involved in the Pan Borneo Highway project that had yet to be implemented.

Baru said the project was 21.3% completed.

“As at Sept 21, after the end of the PDP (project delivery partner) agreement of the Sabah Pan Borneo Highway Project, only 12 out of 35 packages had been awarded to contractors, ” he said.

“Of the 12 packages, one contract was terminated due to the incapability of the contractor, and that is Package 15 from Tawau to Semporna, ” he said.

In reply to a supplementary question from Ahmad, Baru said the ministry, through the state Works Department, had appointed 75 out of the 158 professional officers of various backgrounds and disciplines required for the project.
