Tesla's Enhanced Autopilot System to launch next month

SAN FRANCISCO: From mid-December, Tesla Model S and Model X cars will be getting new self-driving capabilities reports Mashable.

Tesla's CEO Elon Musk made the announcement in a tweet posted on Sunday, confirming that customers with a new Model S or Model X could expect the new functions to start arriving in "about three weeks."

The car company had already announced back in October that all of its future cars would come with an upgraded version of Autopilot which would enable virtually full autonomous driving.

"Enhanced Autopilot" adds cameras and supersonic sensors to the current system, as well as a big boost of processing power.

The system will enable drivers to take advantage of autonomous features such as automatic lane changing, matching speed to traffic conditions, self-parking when near a parking spot and more, according to Tesla.

However although the cars will come with the hardware needed, it will still be months until drivers have all these new features. And Tesla customers will likely have to wait until late 2017 for "Level 5" autonomy - the ability of the cars to drive themselves in all types of conditions, subject to transport regulations.
