The tighter the better for motorcycle body armour, testers urge

STUTTGART: Tightly strapped-on body armour is the best protection for motorcyclists. In the event of an accident, this kind of protection is far superior to a stylishly cut leather jacket, which can easily shift on contact with tarmac.

A survey by German biking magazine Motorrad points to armoured vests as an alternative to polypropylene back protectors.

These can be donned easily and have an integrated chest protector to provide all-round cover, but by contrast with the classic back protectors do not reach right from the neck to the seat.

Motorrad's tests revealed that the quality of modern back protectors is good all round, with all 14 models tested rated at least "satisfactory" in a price range upwards from US$100. The protective vests scored similarly, with prices in the same range.

Nevertheless, bikers should exercise care when buying, trying the gear out in their accustomed riding position.

The protection is effective only when it fits properly, and with tall riders, the protection may not cover the back entirely.
