ALOR SETAR: PLUS Malaysia will station personnel at the Bukit Kayu Hitam toll booths to sell Touch ‘n Go cards once the electronic toll collection (ETC) system is implemented on Sept 9.

Its chief operating officer Mohammad Fuad Khusairi said this would make it convenient for foreigners driving into the country via the highway.

“Foreign motorists will be able to buy Touch ‘n Go and PLUSMiles cards at the toll booths of the plaza.

“We are also selling the cards in Thailand and have been creating awareness of the ETC system through announcements over there.

“The Thai authorities have also been notified on our ETC move in Bukit Kayu Hitam,” he told a press conference here yesterday.

Bukit Kayu Hitam is among the 10 toll plazas nationwide that would go cashless from Sept 9. Motorists will need a Touch ‘n Go card, PLUSMiles card or SmartTAG device to use the highways.

The other affected toll plazas in the northern region are Jitra, Penang Bridge and Lunas.

Motorists entering the Buterworth-Kulim Expressway via Kubang Semang would also need the cards or SmartTag devices.

Mohammad Fuad said the ETC system would reduce traffic congestion.

PLUS is now selling PLUSMiles cards with a pre-loaded RM5 value for RM5 until Dec 31 and SmartTAG units at RM96 per unit inclusive of GST (normal price RM127.30) at toll plazas until Sept 30.

In Prai, Penang, hundreds of motorcyclists took advantage of the promotion at the Penang Bridge toll plaza sales office.

Normally, a Touch ‘n Go card would cost RM10 without any preloaded credit.

Teacher Mohd Fakhrul Anwar, 33, said he bought the card for his wife since there was a promotion.

He said he fully supported the cashless system as it would save time and reduce jams at the toll.

“Using Touch ‘n Go would also save me 20% when using the bridge. I only pay RM1.12 instead of RM1.40 as a motorcyclist,” said Mohd Fakhrul, who is from Permatang Pauh.

PLUS’ head of corporate communications Mohd Nizam Ismail said they have sold 5,000 Touch ‘n Go cards since Monday.

The promotion will last till the end of the year.
