LONDON: Following the debut of the Mercedes-Benz X-Class concept in Sweden recently, UK customers have created what seems to be a rush on the yet-to-launch pickup truck that's arriving in 2018.

Due to the phenomenal amount of early demand for the Mercedes-Benz X-Class, Mercedes-Benz Vans has launched a reservation service to enable its potential customers to leave a refundable reservation fee to ensure they are among the first to order the new pickup.

Interested customers can visit the website and place their refundable fee of £1,000 (RM5,600) to ensure that they will be given the first opportunity to order their X-Class.

The one-tonne concept with a ladder-type frame will be able to seat five and can cater for an urban lifestyle as well as family life, while being offered in two variants - the powerful adventurer and the stylish explorer.

The “powerful adventurer” is what Mercedes-Benz defines as a classic pick-up – tough, functional, strong, and with off-road capabilities; whereas the the X-Class stylish explorer goes a step further to make more distinguished.

Power should come from a V6 turbo-diesel that's mated to a 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive system that comes with an electronic traction system, a transfer case with reduction gear and two differential locks.

This should allow it to take on a 1.1 ton payload and tow up to 3.5tons, while being equipped with camera-based driver assistance systems, radar and ultrasound sensors among others.

The pickup will be manufactured in a production cooperation with the Renault-Nissan Alliance at its plant in Barcelona, Spain (for European, Australian and South African markets) in late 2017 and Cordoba, Argentina (Latin American market) in early 2018.

"Many customers we have spoken to have a strong desire to be amongst the first to own the new X-Class, which is incredible considering that it hasn’t been unveiled yet,” said Mercedes-Benz Vans UK managing director Steve Bridge.
