Used child car seats proposal for parents who can't afford new

IPOH: The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry is mulling over a pre-loved child car seat initiative to help those who cannot afford it.

“We will look at how we can recycle old car seats, ” said Deputy Minister Hannah Yeoh.

“A lot of families bought these and kept them at home once their children grew up.

“We want to help those who cannot afford the seats. We also urge manufacturers or sellers to help out, ” she told reporters yesterday. It was announced that families with small children must install the seats in their car starting next year.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke had also said that there would be a six-month grace period before enforcement kicks in.

There have been concerns from some folk as such seats are beyond their means.

Speaking to reporters after opening the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital Anjung Kasih wing here yesterday, Yeoh said the government would look at it on a case by case basis.

“What’s more important is the safety of the children, ” she said, adding that arrangements should be made in accordance with the situation.

“This is something we have thought about for the long term, ” she said.

The policy, she said, was rolled out to protect children and was not meant to burden the folk.

“If we don’t implement it, the victims are the children, ” she added.
