SYDNEY: A video of a daredevil stuntman surfing the waves of Tahiti on a modified motorbike has captured the attention of the internet, attracting more than 3.1 million hits within a day of being uploaded.

In the four-minute video, Australian motorcycle stunt rider Robbie Maddison makes history, skipping off the surface of impossibly clear blue waters in French Polynesia, before riding the most iconic waves of Tahiti, Teahupoo and Papara on his two-wheeled surfboard.

At one point, Maddison looks dangerously close to being swallowed up by the powerful waves, but a teaser shot shows the biker's form miraculously emerging from the swell.

Though Maddison is no stranger to adrenaline-pumping stunts - he doubled for Daniel Craig in the James Bond film Skyfall" - the biker told Surfer magazine that he feared for his life at one point during the ride.

"I don't think the photos or video show how physical it was," he said. "You can't see that when the wave broke right behind me, I honestly thought that might be the end of my life. I've never felt like I was in the wrong place at the wrong time more than I did right there. It was a near-death experience."
