SÃO PAULO: Volkswagen in Brazil presented its most recent model: the Nivus on Thursday in a virtual premiere from here.

This is the first time the Brazilian operations of Volkswagen is developing a vehicle for the international market.

The compact Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV) features an ample vehicle interior and an elevated seating position. It is positioned between the Polo and the T-Cross.

The Nivus is a global model developed in South America, and is also intended for production and sale in other world markets.

The entry-level crossover would be launched first on the Brazilian market followed by Argentina later this year.

Other South American markets will follow in 2021. In the long term, the new model is expected to be sold outside Latin America as well. A European version will be produced at Volkswagen's Spanish plant in Pamplona in 2021.

The Nivus is powered by a 1.0-litre engine mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox. It has the same wheelbase as the Polo but is noticeably longer.

This year, Volkswagen do Brasil is planning the brand’s largest product campaign in South America with a total of 20 new product launches.

The Nivus is developing a new segment in the Brazilian market with an innovative design that combines SUV elements and coupé lines.

It is amongst the largest models within the small vehicle segment with a luggage compartment capacity of 415 litres.

The vehicle is based on the modular transverse matrix (MQB) and will be built at the Anchieta plant using cutting-edge production processes.
