Volkswagen updates EA211 engine

DETROIT: Volkswagen of America has announced its plans to provide a new turbocharged 1.4-litre TSI (EA211) engine for the Jetta, thereby replacing its current turbocharged 1.8-litre and a naturally aspirated (NA) 2.0-litre engine.

The new turbocharged 1.4-litre is derived from the existing EA211 engine, which features an aluminium construction along with direct injection to produce 150hp at 5,000rpm and 250Nm of torque from 1,400rpm.

The German carmaker said it should provide 7-13% better fuel over its turbocharged 1.8-litre and naturally aspirated 2.0-litre engines.

The 1.4-litre petrol engine features a lightweight aluminium construction, an integrated (into the head) exhaust manifold, and a toothed-belt drive for its double overhead camshaft valvetrain that incorporates variable intake and exhaust timing.

The only aspect to be carried over from the preceding EA111 engine is the 82mm cylinder spacing, while the cylinder bore has been decreased by 2mm (to 74.5mm) and the stroke increased to 80mm.

This helps make the engine more compact yet helps increase torque levels while maintaining a compression ratio of 10.0:1 and direct fuel injection.

This engine’s turbocharging system offers better boost response thanks to its intake manifold, which enables the use of a surprisingly small, single-scroll compressor, while the intercooler has been integrated directly into the injection-moulded induction pipe to help generate its 250Nm of torque.
