DETROIT: Volkswagen has chosen the Detroit NAIAS car show to present the updated North American version of its new Passat midsize saloon, which gets more aggressive styling and some noticeable tweaks inside.

Despite the huge shift to SUVS and crossovers, the Passat is still holding its own in the North American passenger car market.

The 2019 Passat retains the underlying architecture of the previous model but more or less everything else is new, both inside and out. VW says the car will appeal to state-side buyers who find SUVs just too bulky.

The US Passat was revealed to the media on the first press day of the huge car expo which is open to the public from Jan 14-27. The NAIAS is the world's largest car show.

By contrast the new European Passat version is more low key. It is due to touch down in Geneva in March and has been given only a mild makeover.

Modernised Passat styling for the US includes a wider front grille and a more fastback-like roofline.

The rear aspect has been redesigned and there is brand-new infotainment inside with an 8-inch touchscreen.

Notably, the digital instruments on the latest Passats for Europe are missing on the US version.

The Passat retains the same platform and will be offered in America with one engine only - a 2-litre, four-cylinder petrol motor turning out 174 horsepower.

The engine comes with a six-speed automatic box as standard. VW has revealed no performance or fuel consumption details and no electrified or hybrid versions are being offered.

VW is stressing safety on the new US Passat which gets lane assist, blind-spot assist and auto cruise.
