CKD Volvo S60 T8 and facelifted S90 coming, 8-year warranty on PHEV batteries

PETALING JAYA: Volvo Car Malaysia (VCM) announced that it will launch the locally assembled S60 T8 sedan and the facelifted S90 sedan this year on the back of buoyant sales in 2019.

Introduced locally last October, the fully imported S60 was priced at RM295,888. It is powered by an award-winning T8 Twin Engine AWD plug-in hybrid system that delivers 407hp. The S60 comes with Autobrake technology to mitigate oncoming collisions.

The S90, launched in Malaysia in 2017 is ripe for a facelift but don't expect major changes. As foreign reports have said last year, the refreshed S90 will see minor changes to the lower fascia, grille and headlamps. Taillights and possibly the exhaust tips could be tweaked. The current S90 available in Momentum and Inscription trims, starts from RM338,888. The base variant gets a 2.0 litre turbocharged Drive-E four-cylinder engine that makes 250hp.

The kinetic energy recovery braking system from the refreshed XC90 should carry over to the new S90 as well as the latest hybrid and PHEV tech features.

VCM also announced that new plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) bought from Jan 1 this year will come with an 8-year battery warranty.

This is an upgrade from the current warranty of 5 years/120,000km coverage and puts Volvo in the same league as Honda, which also provides 8 years warranty on hybrid batteries. At this point, Mercedes-Benz and BMW warranty coverage is trailing behind with their 6 year/100,000km on hybrid batteries.
