First introduced for the 2018 Atlas and Tiguan, the warranty now covers additional 2018 VW models: Beetle, Beetle Convertible, Golf, Golf Alltrack, Golf GTI, Golf R, and Golf SportWagen, Jetta and Passat.
The warranty, a six-year or 72,000 miles/115,872km (whichever occurs first) bumper-to-bumper New Vehicle Limited Warranty, can be transferred to subsequent owners throughout its duration.
It includes powertrain coverage for engines, transmissions and optional 4Motion all-wheel-drive systems. Additionally, all the elements of the warranty can be transferred to subsequent owners for up to six years or 72,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the date it was first sold new.
“Expanding this warranty beyond two models gives our dealers another compelling argument for the rest of our lineup, and we believe it will lead to a reduced overall cost of ownership for buyers,” said Volkswagen of America sales and marketing executive vice president Derrick Hatami.
Reuters reported that Volkswagen is taking another US$3bil charge to fix diesel engines in the United States, lifting the total bill for its emissions-test cheating scandal to around US$30bil.
The German group is struggling to put the two-year-old “Dieselgate” scandal behind it, and working to transform itself into a maker of mass-market electric cars.
Last year, VW agreed with US authorities to spend up to US$15.3 billion to buy back or fix up to 475,000 2.0-litre polluting diesel cars.
On Friday, VW said it was setting aside an additional US$3bil as hardware fixes for the models were proving tougher than expected and would take significantly longer. Evercore ISI analyst Arndt Ellinghorst said the complications would amount to 5,200 euros per car.
