BERLIN: Volkswagen will relieve its China unit chief Stephan Woellenstein of duty at the beginning of February next year, German publication automobilwoche reported today, citing sources.

There are three or four candidates that can replace Woellenstein and an announcement from the carmaker should follow soon, automobilwoche added.

Earlier this year, VW chief executive Herbert Diess had said Volkswagen must change its approach to how it sells electric vehicles (EV) in China.

"Sales are picking up but it requires focus and different approaches as the customers for the EVs are much younger and different to our customer base we are having with the more traditional brands like Volkswagen in China," said Diess.

Volkswagen's deliveries of battery-powered electric vehicles to China more than tripled in the first nine months of the year.

Deliveries of battery electric vehicles (BEV) to the world's largest car market stood at 47,200 in the January-September period, up from 15,700 in the same period last year.

By the end of the year, Volkswagen wants to sell between 80,000 and 100,000 of its all-electric ID series in China.
