UPDATE: No change. Details here.

WASHINGTON: It seems that Volkswagen is planning to change its name to "Voltswagen" when selling its growing line-up of electric cars in America.

Automotive News claimed it confirmed the name change with a person familiar with the company's plans.

The unnamed source said the change was in line with the company's strategy to only sell electric cars in the United States in future.

The buzz over the name change was sparked by a leaked VW press release on Monday. It was briefly posted on the VW media site before it was taken down. In the press release, it was revealed that Volkswagen of America would use the brand name “Voltswagen” to differentiate its EV line-up.

Apparently, the name change is restricted to the North American market. The Voltswagen unit would remain part of Volkswagen of America.

Volkswagen began deliveries of its ID.4 to US dealers this month and has started an advertising campaign to market the electric crossover.

Like the ID.3 hatchback, the ID.4 is based on a new modular electric drive matrix (MEB) platform that offers a spacious interior as a result of the compact design of the electric drive. Thanks to the low drag coefficient and scalable battery system, ranges of more than 500km are possible with the ID.4.
