VW'S electric flagship to be called Trinity

WOLFSBURG: VW says it wants to create an entirely new electric flagship over the coming years, and has announced it wants to call the car "Trinity."

The world's largest car manufacturer says the name refers to the car's combination of three areas that the company wants to focus on: an additional electric platform of its own, more digital connectivity and a "fully networked production processes" in the factory.

Revealing some of the first, early details about the electric people's car since plans were first announced in December, core brand boss Ralf Brandstaetter said the car will be manufactured at the company's headquarters in Wolfsburg in Germany from around 2026.

Similar to its subsidiaries Audi, Porsche and Bentley with their own efforts to take on Tesla, the group wants to bring together expertise from several areas.

"Trinity" now replaces the working name "Aeroliner" which had been used up to now. We don't yet have details on the style of car, but industry experts have taken the working title as a hint for a streamlined saloon like the Arteon.

VW says it's also planning to step things up in terms of software, and the Trinity will be able to communicate with other cars on the road, as well as other things like traffic lights.

Bernd Osterloh, head of the works council, recently said he expects a "clear six-digit number of units per year" for the car.

The company did not yet want to comment on possible concrete production volumes. The VW Group is investing around 73 billion euros in new technology areas up to and including 2025.
