Watch F-150 electric prototype tow over 450,000kg cargo

DETROIT: Ford recently staged a publicity stunt with its prototype all-electric F-150 by towing 10 double-decker rail cars filled with  forty-two 2019-model year F-150s, weighing more than 450,000kg.

For safety reasons, one should never use a vehicle to tow beyond its towing capacity. In the F-150 prototype demo, it is towing far beyond a production truck’s capacity, supervised by Ford's F-150 chief engineer Linda Zhang. The video clip was released on Tuesday and has since attracted over 570,000 views.

The F-Series is the best-selling truck in America for 42 years in a row. Besides the all-electric F-150, Ford is expected to roll out an F-150 Hybrid that goes on sale next year.

Ford is planning to pour US$11.5 billion to produce over a dozen electrified models by 2022.

It is striking up alliances in its move towards electrification of its product line-up. Earlier this month, it announced it is stepping up co-operation with Volkswagen on electrification and driverless technologies.

Ford will use Volkswagen’s electric vehicle architecture and Modular Electric Toolkit (MEB) to design and build at least one high-volume fully electric vehicle in Europe for European customers starting in 2023.
