TURIN: It's been called the first titanium supercar and it's for sale at the supercar price of US$2.8mil (RM11.2mil).

If you want a one-of-a kind car, this is it, as only one will ever be made. Meet the Vulcano Titanium,  a car that took 10,000 hours to build by hand. It's from the Italian design house Icona founded in Turin but based in Shanghai.

Its supercharged 6.2-litre V-8 powerplant is swiped from a  C6 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and is located behind the front axle for improved handling and dynamics. The engine churns out 670hp and 841Nm of torque that is routed to the rear axle. Icona said the engine could be tuned to over 1,000hp if its owner demands it. The Vulcano Titanium is said to have a 0-100kph sprint time of 2.8s, and proceeds to reach a top speed of 354kph.

Icona said the shift times, the ratios and differential gear have been optimised and calibrated in order to achieve the best balance in the distribution of power. The car uses paddle shifters only, dispensing with the classic gear lever.

In addition, the shock absorbers are fully adjustable in rebound and compression, and this makes the choice possible between several possible settings in order to identify the most suitable calibration to the drive type.

The fact the car is for sale is the news this year but it has been around since the 2013 Shanghai auto show where it was introduced as a concept. At the time, the body was a combination of aluminum and composite materials. The titanium version was revealed last year in the US at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, and it's now for sale.

The video above shows the designers going into uncharted but exciting territory and the challenges they face in shaping a hard and non-elastic material that was, on the other hand, used because it was very light and strong. In addition, Icona can now claimed bragging rights to being the first in the world to successfully create such a car.

The Vulcano Titanium wear Pirelli P Zero tyres and gets 20-inch forged aluminum wheels in front and 21-inch at the rear, with Brembo carbon-ceramic discs and 6-piston calipers at the front and 4-piston calipers at the rear.

The carbon fibre cabin is dressed in a leather-Alcantara upholstery. Bucket seats are also made of carbon fibre. A 12.3-in digital meter cluster in front of the driver is complemented by a larger tablet-size touchscreen that is festooned with jetfighter-style switches below it.

The supercar will be on show again at the 2016 Salon Privé Concours d’Elégance at Blenheim Palace, 100km north-west of here from Sept 1-3.
