HONG KONG: Paying almost HK$1 million for real estate is beyond the financial dreams of most people, even if it would get them a luxury mansion. But what about paying it for a parking space?

That's what one flush buyer has done here, according to a report in the South China Morning Post.

The 12.5-square-metre parking space in the skyscraper known as "The Center" sold for HK$969,000 (RM517,000), making it the most expensive parking space in the world, according to the report.

The Center, a skyscraper housing offices in central Hong Kong, already holds the record for the most expensive commercial building ever sold. A consortium of investors paid HK$5.15 billion for it in 2018.

According to the newspaper, Johnny Cheung Shun-yee, one of the consortium members, did not want to say who bought the parking space.

The report said the costly transaction underlined the wealth gap in Hong Kong, which has been beset by anti-government protests in recent weeks.
