MALACCA: A trailer driver has surrendered following the Sunday incident where some 20 cars belonging to soccer fans parked along the shoulder of Sungai Udang-Paya Rumput-Ayer Keroh Highway (SPA) were rammed into.

Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Shaikh Abdul Adzis Shaikh Abdullah said the driver, who is in his 50s, was taken into police custody after he lodged a police report at Salak Tinggi police station in Selangor at 5.12pm on Monday before being sent to Melaka Tengah police headquarters.

“The driver was referred to the Melaka Tengah traffic unit on the same day.

“We have also confiscated the trailer to have it examined at Puspakom as part of the probe,” he said, adding that the driver has been remanded until March 18 to facilitate investigation under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act.

During the incident, some 20 vehicles were badly damaged when a trailer smashed into them.

The incident is believed to have happened at about 10.15pm Sunday while the fans were watching the game between Johor Darul Ta’zim and the Police at Hang Jebat stadium in Krubong here.

Fans only discovered that the cars were damaged after one motorist informed them at the end of the match.

Meanwhile, Stadium Hang Jebat Corporation’s chairman Datuk Wira Mohd Yusoff Mahadi said there were sufficient parking spaces within the stadium complex.

He said the parking lots surrounding the stadium could accommodate up to 15,000 vehicles while a vast tract of adjourning land was also made into parking area.

“There are still many empty parking spaces inside the stadium, but the supporters chose to park their vehicles by the shoulder of the highway,” he said.

“We have organised many other major events previously but such incidents never happened before as the guests parked at the right places,” he said.
