Ford patents transformable 2-to-4 cupholder design

DENVER: Ford has created a simple yet clever cupholder design which it has patented to make sure no one else can claim its theirs.

The cupholder between the front seats has a design with two main components – a combination cupholder and storage bin with upper panel that slides from left to right to transform the storage bin into two additional cupholders. And if a driver or passenger needs more open storage space, the panel easily slides back to the right, clearing the way for bulkier items that won’t fit in a cupholder space.

The unique cupholder design will find its way first into the 2017 Super Duty pick-up truck which arrives this autumn in the United States.

As the name suggests, the Super Duty is intended as a work truck, typically for crews of four or more, Ford's four-barrel assembly brings the total number of cupholders on the all-new truck to 10.

“Hard working Super Duty customers love having cupholders and storage close at hand,” says Doug Scott, Ford truck group marketing manager. “This transformable cupholder is another insightful example of how the Ford Truck Team knows truck customers better than anyone else.”
