PETALING JAYA: Drawing up and enforcing stricter rules on motorcycle exhaust systems will be a better way to curb emissions, said Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Aziz Kaprawi.
He said the management of carbon emissions by vehicles is under the jurisdiction of the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and Natural Resources and Environment Ministry.
"JPJ could carry out enforcement on all motorcycles that have modified their exhaust systems which are not in accordance with the law," he told The Star Online today.
Abdul Aziz added that if emissions are really the concern, then lorries and buses are bigger culprits.
"If it's about emissions, lorries and buses are worse offenders," he said.
He was responding to a suggestion by Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor to ban "kap chai (small)" motorcycles in the city to reduce emissions.
Making the suggestion Sunday, Tengku Adnan had also said that snatch thieves usually used "kap chai" bikes to commit crime.
Responding to this, Abdul Aziz said "snatch thieves even used cars".
He also said that the Government should first ensure that there are other convenient options for transport for the people before enforcing a motorcyle ban.
"We don't want to create difficulties. Banning motorcyles may jeopardise the livelihood of some people," he said.
