Mazda starts production of MX-5 Miata RF

By CARSIFU | 6 October 2016

HIROSHIMA: Mazda has started production of the 2017 MX-5 Miata RF retractable hardtop (known as Roadster RF in Japan) on Tuesday at its plant here. Production began with models bound for North American and European markets, where sales launches begin from early 2017. In Japan, the MX-5 RF will go on sale later this year.

An extension of the MX-5 family, the MX-5 RF features fastback styling with a smooth roofline that slopes down to the rear end, and its unique rear roof and retractable back window offer a new open-air feeling. The power roof can be opened or closed at speeds of up to 10kph with the press of a button, and the roof is stowed compactly and efficiently in a limited space. Despite its fastback styling and hardtop roof, the MX-5 RF offers the same amount of trunk space as the soft-top model.

The model will feature either the SKYACTIV-G 1.5 or SKYACTIV-G 2.0 petrol engine, depending on the market. The North American model will have the SKYACTIV-G 2.0.

Production of the MX-5 reached 1 million units on April 22. The model is highly acclaimed, boasting over 280 automotive awards from around the world, including being the first vehicle to win World Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year in the same year at the 2016 New York International Auto Show.

In the United States, where there is a huge MX-5 following, the first 1,000 units will be known as the MX-5 RF Launch Edition. It's the same iteration of the car that was revealed to the world at the 2016 New York International Auto Show. It showcases a Machine Gray exterior paint, a black roof, interior Auburn Nappa leather, and a special launch edition scuff plate badge. Regular production 2017 MX-5 RF vehicles will not be made available in this colour combination.
