STUTTGART:  The Porsche 911 GT2 RS has set a new record for road-approved sports cars on the 20.6km Nürburgring Nordschleife on Sept 20, with a time of 6min 47.3 seconds.

The deed was achieved in the presence of a notary and even surpassed Porsche’s own expectations after Porsche test driver Lars Kern helming the GT2 RS crossed the finish line with an average speed of 184.11kph.

“At the start of the development process, we set ourselves a lap time target for the GT2 RS of less than 7mins and 5.0 seconds," said Porsche vice president motorsport and GT cars Frank-Steffen Walliser.

"The credit for beating this target by 17.7 seconds goes to our development engineers, mechanics and drivers, who demonstrated an exceptionally strong team performance. This result makes it official - the GT2 RS is not only the most powerful, but also the fastest 911 ever built,” added Walliser.

The road-going 911 weighed in at 1,470kg with a full tank of petrol and celebrated its world premiere at the Festival of Speed in Goodwood in the UK at the end of June this year.

It was introduced with a 700hp (+80hp) and 750Nm (+50Nm) twin-turbo flat-six engine that's 80hp and 50Nm more than its 3.6-litre predecessor.

This allows the two-seater rear-wheel driven coupe to accelerate from 0-100kph in 2.8 seconds before reaching a top speed of 340kph.
